Johnanna Ganz
Point Scholar: 2006-2009
Hamline University
B.A., Art History and Women’s Studies
Johnanna was raised in a small, conservative community of Merrill, in
Wisconsin by parents who actively spoke out against all of the queer
community. Throughout high school, Johnanna flourished, she became a
member and leader of many of the school organizations. During her
senior year in high school, Johnanna came to terms with her identity;
however, she knew it was not an identity her community would be
willing to accept. After coming out to a few friends, gossip and
intolerance began to swell. Despite her active involvement, Johnanna
remained in constant fear of the repercussions of her decision to vocalize her queer identity.
After she turned 18, Johnanna left her parent's home and lived with
friends until she graduated. After enduring and growing from much
hardship, Johnanna left for Hamline University in the Twin Cities.
After arriving, she became actively involved in her campus community--
participating in plays, and the track team, being a first year student
orientation leader, a Resident Advisor and was promoted to an
Assisstant Hall Director. In addition to all of her activities, she
worked part time and maintained an A- average. She strived to be a queer role model to her peers during her time at Hamline.
As a Point Scholar, Johnanna proudly graduated from Hamline University
in May of 2009. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Women's Studies and Art History. She is currently pursuing
further education in a Master of Arts program in Gender Studies at the
University of Northern Iowa.
